Joan Ford Artist

I try to capture the essence of an object or scene as I have experienced it at a particular time. I look for the unusual aspect, the fleeting image, the interesting juxtaposition, repeated shapes, and those which are partially obscured. Although I make drawings, and perhaps photos, the image remains mostly in my thoughts for a while where much of the initial process takes place. I work mainly in oils on canvas, enjoying the freedom this gives me to build up layers of paint, creating soft tones and textures which allow the work to evolve. This too can take place over a period of some weeks or months.

I believe that this contemplative process is reflected in the tranquillity of the finished painting.
